Washi (和紙) is traditional Japanese paper processed by hand using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree Washi paper is one of Japan’s most fundamental, and often overlooked, artistic products. During 1,300 years of production, it has formed the backbone of many other Japanese art forms. Washi paper is so ingrained in Japanese culture, that there are towns built around washi paper making. They used it for writing, painting, and making some art.
